United for Refugee Families PDF Print E-mail

altUnited for Refugee Families is a community-based team of United Churches that has worked to bring a Syrian refugee family to our community. In 2016-17, this group, which includes Hope United Church, sponsored Dalal & Jakar Alisso and their daughter Areen. Jakar arrived in Halifax in 2017. Thanks to all those at Hope UC who helped to fulfill a list of laundry room supplies and who helped organize and carry out Jakar's "move" into the apartment. If you are a member of Hope United and wish to donate, please make out a cheque to Hope United, indicate that it is for United for Refugees and give it to Sue Hawkes. She will ensure that you receive a charitable receipt. For more information please speak to Susan Hawkes, Geoff Lewis, Nancy Wells, or visit the United for Refugee Families Facebook Page. UPDATE May 2019: GREAT NEWS! Jakar’s wife and daughter arrived in Halifax on May 22nd for a joyous reunion -- Welcome to Canada!

Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in the Congregational Meeting on Sunday, May 12th following worship. The motion to remove the church pews and replace them with more comfortable and versatile church chairs was passed. The Board & Property Committee will continue to keep the congregation informed as we explore further and move forward with these approved updates to our worship space.

On May 25th at 5pm we will be part of the Ecumenical Dinner and Variety Show at St. Margaret of Scotland Anglican Church. This has been a successful endeavor among the congregations of Saint Mother Teresa Parish, St. Mark’s, St. Margaret of Scotland, Northwood Centre and Hope in the past. The meal is put together with each church taking on responsibility for some part. The freewill offering will be donated to “The Northend/Westwood Opportunities Fund for children.” If you are so moved to help out there is a sign-up sheet at the back of the church. Thank you and look forward to seeing you there.
